GAMSTOP: the multi-operator self-exclusion scheme
GAMSTOP is a free service that blocks your access to every gambling website and app run by a Gambling Commission licensee, in one registration. Since 31 March 2020, participation in GAMSTOP has been a licence condition for every UKGC-licensed operator, so this isn't something a licensed casino can opt out of.
When you register, you choose a minimum exclusion period: six months, one year, five years, or five years with automatic renewal. Operators check the GAMSTOP database every time you try to log in or open a new account, and are required to prevent access if you're registered. You can't lift the exclusion yourself during that minimum period — once it's set, it holds until it expires or, on the auto-renewing option, until you actively switch renewal off during the final months of a term.
GAMSTOP only covers operators licensed by the Gambling Commission. It has no reach over unlicensed sites operating outside UK regulation, which is one of several reasons those sites carry more risk than a licensed one.
